Trieste is calling - final event of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series and Italian Melges24Tour

September 27, 2021 - Trieste, Italy - The final event of the 2021 Melges 24 European Sailing Series and 2021 Italian Melges24Tour will be part of the legendary Barcolana calendar - the largest sailing race in the world held in Trieste, Italy. Hosted by the Società Triestina Sport del Mare - ASD,  in co-operation with the Italian Melges 24 Class and International Melges 24 Class Associations, Melges 24 regatta has been scheduled just one week before the regatta of records and the participants will enjoy the great atmosphere the town offers in that period. The Melges 24 showdown will start on October 1st and the winners of the Trieste regatta and of both sailing series will be crowned on Sunday, October 3rd.

Melges 24 teams keep it tight into final battle in Trieste.

During the 2021 season four events have been ranked for the Melges 24 European Sailing series - three regattas were sailed in Malcesine and Riva del Garda on Garda lake in June, July and August; fourth event was sailed on the waters of Slovenia, where the new Melges 24 European champions were found out in Portoroz on September 4-11. The fifth event of the series was scheduled for past weekend to lake Attersee in Austria, but was cancelled because of too few entries by registration deadline. Current ranking takes into account thirty eight single races and nine discards (the scoring  and discards were considered and decided taking into account travel restrictions and complicated arrangements due to Covid-19 influences).

All-Italian provisional podium of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2021 sees Sergio Caramel's Arkanoe by Montura with a two-point lead ahead of Paolo Brescia's Melgina, both teams have been sailing all four events. Only one point behind sits on third place the new Melges 24 European Champion, Andrea Racchellli's Altea. The best Corinthian team, German Michael Tarabochia's White Room with helm Luis Tarabochia, is on the fourth position, while new Melges 24 Corinthian European Champion, Estonian Tõnu Tõniste's Lenny rounds up top five.

Sixth in the ranking is German Peter Karrie's Nefeli ahead of third best Corinthian team in the ranking, Marco Zammarchi's Taki 4 from Italy, followed by Miles Quinton's Gill Race Team steered by Geoff Carveth from UK seated eighth.  Corinthian teams Akos Csolto's Seven-Five Nine from Hungary and Marco Cavallini's Jeco Team round out the Top 10 in ninth and tenth as all eyes now turn to the last event in Trieste.

Current ranking results of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2021 after 4 events

At least five of top ten ranked teams are signed up to race in Trieste and the battle for the title and podium placements is not over until the last race.

The vicinity to Portoroz, Slovenia, where just two weeks ago the European championship took place and where the Melges 24 international fleet has had one regatta of the European series a year since 2014, has been helping to grow the Melges 24 fleet of Trieste Gulf. For that IM24CA is particularly thankful to Davide Rapotez and his crew Simone Viduli of Destriero ITA579, for their enthusiasm and dedication to keep the Melges 24 spirit high in this region and organize this event in Trieste.

Simone Viduli, main organizer of the regatta is delighted to welcome international Melges 24 fleet in Trieste:  "We are very happy to organize for the second consecutive year in Trieste, in the city of sailing, at the Società Triestina Sport del Mare, the final stage of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2021.

Last year 19 teams joined us and it was the most numerous stage of 2020 season, we hope the crews will trust us and the number of participants will be numerous also this year.

Although at the local level the epidemiological situation is totally under control, all the necessary precautions against Covid-19 will be taken between athletes and organizers. We will do our best to organize a nice weekend of fun racing for all participants both at sea and also on land!"
