IM24CA World Council Annual General Meeting 2025 – Summary Report
25 November 2025 - The International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA) held its World Council Annual General Meeting on Saturday, November 22, bringing together national class representatives, Executive Committee members, and observers for a comprehensive review of the class’s current status and future direction.
While the detailed Minutes will follow, below is a summary of the main discussions, decisions, and leadership updates.
Class Activity & National Reports
The meeting opened with reflections on the successful 2024 season, including the recent Melges 24 Worlds in Trieste, and an overview of key activities leading into 2025. National class representatives then shared updates from their regions, highlighting both progress and challenges.
Austria, Canada, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Great Britain, Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland and the United States all reported on membership trends, local regattas, youth development, and event planning. Italy noted a record 48 active members and strong participation at events in Riva and Monfalcone; Croatia announced plans for a U25 championship; the U.S. highlighted preparations for the 2026 Worlds in Harbor Springs; and Norway outlined progress toward hosting the 2026 Europeans.
A common theme across reports was the need to continue strengthening Corinthian participation and ensuring national fleets remain supported and connected.
Marketing & Communications
The class reviewed its media and communications performance over the past year. Despite global algorithm changes resulting in significant drops in Facebook and Instagram reach, the overall engagement remained strong. The group agreed on a strategic shift toward short-form video, reels, technical content, and offseason storytelling to maintain momentum year-round.
A working group including members of the Executive Committee and the communications team will prepare a 2026 content plan, focusing on unique media, technical tutorials, and improved reach through varied formats.
Financial Overview
The financial report showed stable income and expenses through 2025, with discussions focused on long-term sustainability. The Council approved the 2026 budget, while also recognising the need to review membership and sail label fees at the next AGM to adapt to rising costs and evolving member expectations.
Sponsorship opportunities remain a priority, with several members emphasising the importance of creating value for partners and offering clearer pathways for collaboration.
Melges Performance Sailboats – New Ownership
A special segment of the meeting featured Cate and Allan Terhune, the new owners of Melges Performance Sailboats.
They introduced their vision for the future of the company, reaffirming their commitment to the Melges 24 class, updating the Council on boat production, part availability, and plans to support major future events.
Four new Melges 24s were launched in 2025, with additional boats already in the production queue for 2026.
Technical Committee Report
IM24CA Chief Measurer Branko Parunov delivered a report on the 2025 World Championship inspections and measurement procedures, noting successful operations but identifying specific areas—such as sail measurements and rigging checks—for improvement.
Technical Committee Chair Mike Gozzard presented ongoing work related to jib halyard issues, class rule updates, and future technical content needs. A rule update aligning class rules with current World Sailing regulations was approved.
Championship Reports and Planning for 2026–2027
The meeting discussed the recent World Championship in Trieste, where the media coverage and youth team initiatives were praised. The race committee addressed issues with backstay and forestay breakages, emphasising the need for regular checks and raising sailors' awareness of this. The group also reviewed the event's success, including the media team's efforts in live broadcasting and the positive impact on the local community.
The World Council reviewed updates from:
2026 Worlds – Harbor Springs, Michigan (George Peet)
2026 Europeans – Tønsberg, Norway (Vemund Gransæther)
2025/6 North Americans – Miami, Florida (Scot Zimmerman)
The Council also received a compelling bid for the 2027 Melges 24 World Championship from Sailing Club Trogir, proposing Pula, Croatia (29 May – 5 June 2027).
After discussion, the venue was unanimously approved.
Constitutional Changes & Executive Committee Elections
The class approved the addition of a new Executive Committee role, Member At-Large (Member World), to strengthen representation and continuity. IM24CA Executive Committee
Elections confirmed:
Chair – Duncan Stamper (CAN)
Vice Chair, Americas – Chelsea Simms (USA)
Member Americas – Scot Zimmerman (USA)
Member Europe – Luka Šangulin (CRO)
Member At-Large – Michael Tarabochia (GER)
Technical Committee Chair – Mike Gozzard (CAN) (re-appointed)
This transition marks the end of Laura Grondin’s six-year tenure as Class Chair.
Outgoing Chair Laura Grondin – Closing Reflections
Laura Grondin: “After six years serving as Chair, it is a bittersweet moment to be leaving the World Council. I am delighted that the class is in great shape with growing numbers at our championships and a healthy cash reserve. New boats are being built, and masts are available! Mike Gozzard's tireless leadership of the Technical Committee has been critical to the success of the new masts and to resolving many other issues. Congratulations to Cate and Allan Terhune for acquiring the Melges Boat Works; I thank them for their commitment to supporting the Melges 24 class.
Welcome and congratulations to Duncan Stamper as our new Chair! And congratulations to our returning Executive Committee members, Chelsea Simms, Vice Chair Americas, Scot Zimmerman, Member Americas, and Michael Tarabocchia, in the revised position of Member At-Large, and to Luka Sangulin, joining as the Member Europe.
We revised the Executive Committee to add the Member At-Large position (also known as Member World) to increase the committee's horsepower, recognising that we no longer have participating NCAs or members from Asia Pacific, leaving us with two unfilled positions. With his lengthy time serving the class, Michael Tarabochia, who consistently puts the organisation and all of our sailors first, is the right person to fill this role.
We have a great lineup of championships through 2027, and we just approved the 2027 Worlds in Pula, Croatia.
I look forward to seeing you all on the water!”
Incoming Chair Duncan Stamper – Vision for the Future
Duncan Stamper: “Firstly, I would like to say an enormous thank you to outgoing chairman, Laura Grondin… Through her steady leadership during and after the pandemic, she has left the class in excellent shape.
My focus for the year ahead will be membership, youth, and events. We must be more inclusive of local teams and global regions, strengthen youth engagement, and return to long-range planning of championships.
I am both honoured and humbled to lead such a legendary class… Long live the wonderful Melges 24!”
Looking Ahead
The IM24CA enters 2026 with renewed leadership, clear priorities, and strong momentum. With new boats being built, major championships scheduled through 2027, and a revitalised focus on youth and global engagement, the class is well-positioned for continued growth.
