Farewell to a True Melges 24 Sailor – Helmut Gottwald

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Helmut Gottwald, a beloved member of the Austrian and international Melges 24 family. For two decades, Helmut’s passion for the Melges 24 class and his boat ORCA AUT837 was boundless. His spirit, determination, and love for sailing inspired everyone around him—on and off the racecourse.

The International Melges 24 Class Association joins the Orca Sailing Team and the entire community in remembering Helmut with great respect and gratitude.

With deep sadness, we inform you that our helmsman, Helmut Gottwald, has left us. He not only won countless regattas, but for many years also managed to win against his serious illness. Even this year, Heli led our crew in Opatija, Torbole, and Monfalcone with his strength, experience, and passion.

For twenty years, the Melges 24 was his home on the sea. Now Heli sails on another sea.

The Kärtner Yachtclub Klagenfurt mourns the loss of one of its finest sailors and longtime members, Helmut Gottwald, who passed away shortly after his 58th birthday following a long illness. From his early days in the Optimist, 420, 470, and 49er classes, Helmut grew into one of Austria’s most accomplished sailors and a dedicated club leader.

As KYCK Chairman from 2005 to 2008, he introduced new structures in marketing and regatta organisation that continue to shape the club today. Known for his fairness, sportsmanship, and camaraderie, Helmut will be remembered both for his contributions on shore and for his success at the helm — particularly in the Melges 24 class, where he earned multiple Austrian Championship titles with his loyal Orca crew.

The KYCK and the entire sailing community will cherish the memory of a remarkable sailor, leader, and friend.
