Eight Bells Toll: Bill 'Billy' Goldsberry

The U.S. and International Melges 24 Class Associations mourn the passing of someone truly special – Bill "Billy" Goldsberry, a true legend of the Melges 24 family.

For so many years, Billy was a familiar and welcoming presence wherever Melges 24 sailors came together and raced. Whether he was taking care of his beloved Michael Goldfarb's War Canoe team, helping launch or retrieve boats, packing trailers, lending a hand to another crew, or simply sharing his unmistakable smile, Billy embodied the very best of our Class. His kindness, generosity, and quiet willingness to help anyone who needed it left a lasting impression on countless sailors and friends. He never sought the spotlight, yet his presence was one of the constants that made our regattas feel like home.

Fair winds and following seas, Billy.

As we remember Billy, we also hold close his son, Jonny, and the entire Goldsberry family.

“Jonny - you carry forward the same humility, kindness, and commitment to our sport that made your dad so deeply respected and loved. We want you to know that we're standing beside you now, just as your dad stood beside so many of us through the years. The Melges 24 Class will always be your home, and Billy's legacy will be felt fleet-wide and on every starting line where Melges 24 sailors gather.”
