Melges Young Guns Firing Last Weekend

Last weekend the RPAYC hosted the third Melges Young Guns Regatta.  Each year generous Melges 24 and Melges 32 owners hand over their pride and joy so that some of Sydney’s young guns can experience Melges.  Not only does it provide the opportunity for the owners to meet some of Australia’s younger successful sailors but it also allows the young guns to compete with their own team in the Melges classes.  Previous Young Gun winners include the London Olympic Women’s Match Racing team.  Talk now is of the 2014 proposal requiring the owners to steer the last race for double points.

The day consisted of four races sailed in delightful autumn conditions on Pittwater raced in a competitive spirit of fun, banter from the support boats.  Melges mother ship Snowy Owl a 52 foot Maritimo owned by Dug Russell (Amigos) supplied a fridge full of refreshments and nibbles on the water.

Most of the crews are regulars on the Melges circuit, including current Moth World Champion Josh Mc Knight steering Easy Tiger III and winning the Melges 32’s.   Peter Kendall Amigos won the Melges 24’s before heading back to the club for the band, socialising and refreshments supplied.  In true Melges fashion crews then frocked up and continued the night on the town.

Thanks to the Kendall family for their organisation and support of the event and we look forward to Young Guns 2014.
