Lake Macquarie turned on spectacular summer weather for the 2014 Pusser’s Rum Melges 24 New South Wales State Championships.  Lake Macquarie Yacht Club hosted the three day event (21-23 Nov), the largest Melges 24 fleet competing at a State Titles to date.  Interstate teams travelled to Belmont to enjoy the quality competition including South Australian Robin Deussen’s Redmist from Adelaide Sailing Club and Victorian team Jonno Bannister’s Penultimate Challenge from Mornington Yacht Club.

Where do you find that line between keeping top level pros in a fleet to provide that ultimate challenge, and keeping the average racer happy and engaged? It certainly depends on the fleet you’re talking about, but there’s no question that for an open class like the ‪#‎Melges24‬, the amateur owners and crews are absolutely vital to maintaining a successful fleet – and the overall sport.

Tampa, FL - After a fun afternoon and evening of revelry on Saturday, the Melges 24 fleet wearily made it to the docks around 8 a.m. for an early 9:30 Sunday morning start. The goal was to take advantage of the remaining moon wind and sneak in 2-3 more races on the final day, settling the score in both the overall and corinthian fleets.

Legendary sailor/coach Gordy Bowers from Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota proclaims that when a high pressure system is parked over a region and the land cools in the evening, there is a drainage breeze that fills. This breeze remains throughout the morning until the sun heats the land and squashes what is left of…the Moon Wind. Yes, Moon Wind. That is what the Melges 24 fleet had as they left the dock for the second day of racing at the 2014 Melges 24 U.S. Nationals hosted by the Davis Island Yacht Club (DIYC).
